South American Cirrus Clouds

  • Released Wednesday, April 19, 2000

Looking through cirrus clouds over part of South America.

This visualization was made to demonstrate a technique developed by scientists to remove clouds from data images by using cloud data. Initially, you will see a portion of South America with the clouds obstructing the view, then fades to a mask to mask out the clouds, and then removes the clouds from the view, leaving the view of South America unobstructed.

Chart showing side-by-side images of before the clouds are removed (far left), the cloud mask (center), and after the clouds are removed (far right).
