Lake Nyos Zoom-in
On August 21, 1986 (two years after the gas explosion of Lake Monoun. See animation #2346 for more details), Lake Nyos in Cameroon, Africa, also exploded. The resulting gas emissions killed over 1,700 people and livestock in neighboring villages. The deadly effects were seen as far as 25 kilometers away.
