Mars Odyssey: Water Ice/Summer Observations
NASA's Mars Odyssey detected water ice in the northern hemisphere. During the winter months, the icy soil is covered by a thick layer of carbon dioxide ('dry ice') frost obscuring the water ice signature. This animation is match-framed to #2778 and #2779. It shows the areas of ice during a martian summer.
Animation tilts down to show the northern hemisphere of Mars during the summer.
A comparison of the water ice detected by Odyssey in northern summer and winter seasons. In some places the water ice content is more than 90 percent by volume.
Blue colors show the water ice that is revealed during the martian summer.
