The mission of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center is to expand the knowledge of Earth, its environment, our solar system, and the mysteries of the universe through observations from space. Goddard is the largest institution in the world dedicated to these studies making it a vital player in national economics, infusing its budget into state and local economies with powerful results. Five facilities comprise the arm of Goddard. It has a highly skilled and diverse workforce employing more than 9,000 people. In 2010, It funded $3.9 billion in contracts, grants, civil service payroll, and procurements; enhancing business development, creating jobs, and increasing the tax base of countless jurisdictions. It is recognized as an expert in designing, building, testing, and operating instruments and unmanned spacecraft. It has an international reputation for achievement in education, research, engineering, science, technology and exploration. With its partnerships, Goddard is also vital in national security and civil interests with communications, advanced weather forecasting, storm tracking, and climate monitoring. With over 50 years of service, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center has had, and will continue to have, an immeasurable global impact in our understanding of our Earth and its place in the universe.
