Earth spinning through the solar system, proudly bearing a majestic magnetic field emanating deep within its molten metallic core. The ever-changing field is full of fluctuations from many sources. Satellites observing these oscillations let scientists identify individual sources creating the magnetic field. One such source is the motion of the ocean. As the ocean flows, the field lines feel a pull and are dragged along a little. The back-and-forth of the tides cause a small wiggle in the magnetic field. Scientists have isolated this one small, oceanic signal, measuring it from a satellite, orbiting high above our spinning globe. [ beeping ]
