BEST: Engineering Design Process Professional Development Series
This series, hosted by Don Higdon, will guide you through the steps in the Engineering Design Process, a system designed to help introduce students to the method engineers use to approach and solve a design problem.
Introduction: This gives a brief overview of the concepts behind the Engineering Design Process and outlines the goals of the series.
Ask: This video covers the first step of the process, 'Ask.' It discusses how students should first approach a design problem as well as the types of questions they should ask as engineers.
Imagine: The second step in the Engineering Design Process, 'Imagine' covers the brainstorming processes used by students when first attempting to solve a design problem.
Plan: The third video in the series, 'Plan' discusses the need for students to, quite literally, sketch out a solution and lay out a detailed plan.
Create: The fourth step in the process, 'Create' outlines the actual process of implementing a solution, giving practical guidelines for teachers as they assist their students.
Experiment: This video demonstrates the need for students to measure and test their solutions in order to determine whether their designs were successful.
Improve: This final installment in the series discusses the cyclical nature of the engineering process as well as demonstrates how students can revise their designs over time.
