This animation shows a unique picture of annual fire activity. Here, global fire activity between 8/21/2001 and 8/20/2002 is displayed as tiny particles on a rotating globe with each particle depicting the site at which a fire was detected. Daily fires are displayed at a rate of 10 days per second. The fire particles fade over 1.7 seconds and change color as they age from red to orange, yellow and gray.

This image shows a global view of fires detected on 10-11-2001 over Europe, Africa and South America.
