These visualizations show hurricane tracks for Atlantic hurricane seasons 1900 through 2023. Tracks are shown over time. Ten years worth of tracks are shown at once with older tracks within the ten year window more transparent. The thickness of the tracks is driven by the wind speed at each location. Higher wind speeds have thicker tracks. The color of the tracks is driven by the maximum hurricane category each storm achieved.

Three versions of this visualization are included:

  • An equirectangular map that only includes Atlantic hurricanes that passed near the Caribbean Sea
  • An equirectangular map that includes all Atlantic hurricanes regarless of proximity to the Caribbean Sea
  • A close up of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea

There are separate layers with a color legend and dates overlay.
This visualization was created for an Adler Planetarium show.

This is a close up version that does not exclude tracks that did not pass through the Caribbean. A ten year window is shown with tracks closer to the latest year in the window more opaque. The window goes from 1890-1900 until 2013-2023.
